What it is like to get into a rut?

The pendulum of life swings us from one end to the another. In today’s context, I am talking about moving from a place of extreme motivation, passion, and productivity to feeling stuck, having no energy, and just wanting to be in bed munching on junk food and watching Netflix.

Get out of it as soon as you can

There are many reasons why it could happen depending on different individuals. These factors could be exhaustion, burnout, high standards, etc. Whatever the case might be it leaves us unmotivated and we forget why we got motivated in the first place. When this phase overextends in our lives, we slowly slip back into our old patterns and old habits that we have put so much effort, and inner work to overcome. We definitely do not want to get back to that old self that has not yielded much in our lives. Today we will look into how we can get out of a rut smoothly.

3 things you can do to get out of a rut today

  1. The “do something principle” (Mark Manson): The do something principle is pretty self-explanatory. When we have to understand the inspiration – motivation – action cycle, it makes more sense  It is not always linear and is a constant cycle. So starting with something like taking a shower or brushing your teeth could be a great momentum setter.
  2. Rewarding yourself for small wins: This may sound counter-intuitive to my first point but it works well. We have a primal brain as well as a more developed pre-frontal cortex. That means it is almost a negotiation that has to go within ourselves rather than slave-driving the primal brain for it to lash out completely. On the first day of our attempt, we may only do a few things and begin to not feel any momentum, it is great to give yourself a break and could sound like a big no-no but it allows you to get on good terms with the primal part of the brain,
  3. Developing a system: I am talking about progressive overload here. Rather than making it hard on yourself by trying to get super productive on the first day, it is much better to start with a plan on what you could do to get yourself out of a rut. As we create a lifestyle of getting more done and rewarding ourselves with small wins, it will help us sustain our productivity in the long run.
