You must have heard the quote, “Mind is a wonderful servant but a dangerous master”. It is very legit and carries with it a tremendous power in unleashing human potential. But let me ask you and be honest with me, how often you succumb to your mind’s insignificant temptations and desires?

If you are being honest, quite a lot right?

This is happening because we have not chosen to be patient and look into our inner world of thoughts and feelings. The mind has its own language and it uses more than just words we speak in our everyday lives.

The subtlety of examination and experiments has now proved that if you look a little closely, you can know that there are different elements involved in the process of conscious and unconscious thinking.

Let us try this together, close your eyes and take a few deep breaths. As you are now in a relaxed state; choose to imagine the very recent vacation you took. When you are in the process, make it a S-L-O-W. See clearly what you see, how big are those pictures, how far are they in relation to your body, are they bright or dim, are they black and white or color, do you see yourself in the picture or does it feel like experiencing the events right now? Are there any sounds that are important? What is the location of that sound? Is it loud or soft? Is it fast or slow? Is the pitch high or low? How is this making you feel? What is the size of that feeling? Where do you feel it in your body?

Can you now go through this same process with something that you do not see or feel like a pleasant event.

*Note: Do not choose a very negative emotional event, choose a milder one and make sure you jump up and down five times before you can continue to read further.

If you do this process sincerely, you will know how subtly these elements can change your emotional state and how you choose to behave.

For the purpose of this blog, let us take an example of association and disassociation.  Take something that tempts you and see it within you, what you will notice is that you get associated really quickly and feel as if you are experiencing the activity in this moment. What if it is coming in the way of committing to a project which is very important to you?

Try this approach and see how you end up feeling. Take the same temptation again but this time see yourself like watching a movie engaging in that activity. You will instantly feel the reduction in the intensification of the feeling.

This is what the process of disassociation looks like.

And if you really want to take it to another notch , see yourself seeing yourself engaging in this activity.

This will further reduce the intensity of emotion and then you can proceed to focus on something else more important for you and choose to associate with that event.

You can also do this with a painful memory that keeps showing up in your mind. You are less likely to be affected by it. But in the case of creating something important, you can choose to associate and feel the feelings now.

This is one of myriad of other tools and techniques that I implement in my coaching sessions. Can you imagine if a subtle distinction can shift you emotional state and behavior, what could happen when we work with your deeper seated limiting beliefs and re-align your disorganized values?
